When Strength is a Requirement
Where hard traffic or extreme demands are expected, the epoxy flooring requires trowel grade application. It is the optimal technique available for maximal endurance, making a surface with twice the thickness of our typical home or business process. Floors that undergo considerable weight, such as from heavy-duty forklifts, ought to be coated with trowel grade epoxy. Trowel grade also is recommended if the concrete is commonly in contact with caustic or corrosive chemicals.
With thicker epoxies comes added time for curing. Ideally, trowel grade epoxy is laid at temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, F or higher. Under that, and the epoxy, with its clear coat, takes longer to cure. Optimal curing time is 8 to 12 hours for each coat. The final curing, when average activities can begin again, is after 7 days. Below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, F, trowel grade coats are best not tried.
Trowel grade epoxies are not for Do-It-Yourselfers! Skills and experience are essential, as well as high-grade troweling equipment.
